The Unhealthy Love

Love is said to be the most beautiful feeling of all. One that upholds life itself and gives it meaning and purpose. One that gives strength to the weak, peace to the unpeaceful, constant to the constant changes.
But sometimes, people tend to oversell love. Overestimate its power. Overestimate its capability. Overestimate the value it could add to your life. Because, it is viewed as flawless. Because you have never been taught how the kind of love that makes life better looks like. So, you settle in for the love that feels right in the moment, without knowing what it holds for you in the future. See, that is what I call the unhealthy love.
Unhealthy love comes in different forms. It has many faces. But, all of it comes down to this one single thing. It leaves you feeling inadequate. It leaves you feeling like you are not enough. It makes you want to do things that changes you as a person but not for the better. You will be left constantly feeling the need to be someone else to satisfy the other. It just kills the real you, slowly.
Wanting to change for the better is one thing. Wanting to change just so that your love would accept you is detrimental. It reaps you off everything you are, makes your real self lose its very meaning. It makes you regret the existence of the flaws that you should be accepting and celebrating. It takes away what it means to be yourself. But you still do it. Why?
Because that was the love that was oversold to you. The love that should be making your life a little brighter and bearable. The love that should be making you feel loved. But all you are left with now is the hate for yourself for not being good enough, pretty enough, fair enough, tall enough, or just enough. Love that makes you think that you are not up to someone’s standards is not the right kind of love. YES IT IS LOVE, but just not the healthy one. Or, the one that anyone deserves.
